The Effect of Using Pictures on Students’ Speaking Ability At Grade Eight of SMPN 2 Seputih Mataram Lampung Tengah

English is a universal language. English has been the most important language in international communication.

 Speaking has many strategies to develop. Learning English speaking is interesting to study. The purpose of speaking is for communication. Communication can function not only as tool of interaction with other people.

The teaching media should be planned in such a way that learning English especially speaking activity. It can be done by using pictures. The use of pictures can help the teacher to teach the students. These can guide the students to present their idea and o share the information which they saw in the picture.  The use of picture is one of strategies for speaking media. Using of pictures in improving students speaking makes the teaching and learning process becomes more interesting and effective. This can encourage the students to learn English actively, especially to learn speaking.

There are some ways of using pictures. The first, to motivate the students to speak. The second, to create the students response. The third, to provide the students with information. The fourth, to guide spoken descriptions.[1]

The ability of speaking or communicating with others takes an important role. Pictures were believed to be able to stimulate and guide the students to speak. Picture were for illustration, develop students’ imaginations, interests to express idea.

According to Wright(1989:2) says that pictures are not just an aspect of method but through their representation of places, objects, and people they are an essential part of the overall experiences the teachers must help their students to cope. The teacher can use the pictures in any techniques or activities in order to meet the goal of speaking.

Pictures are very valuable resources as they provide a shared experience in the classroom, a need for common language forms to use in the classroom, a variety of tasks, and a focus of interest for students (Raimes, 1983 : 27-28. Therefore, it was believed that pictures were media that could be used to overcome the problems and to help the students to improve their speaking skills.

The problem was affected by some factors students. The first, the students thought that speaking English was difficult. Hey hesitate to express ideas. The second, the students lacked confidence to speak because they were afraid to making mistakes. To teach speaking, teachers should consider some principles.

Broom (2001 : 275-276) suggests seven principles for designing speaking techniques listed as follows :

a.       Use technique that cover the spectrum of learner needs, from language-based focus on accuracy to message-based focus on interaction, meaning, and fluency.

b.      Provide intrinsically motivating techniques.

c.       Encourage the use of authentic language in meaningful contexts.

d.      Provide appropriate feedback and correction.

e.       Capitalize in the natural link between speaking and listening.

f.       Give students opportunities to initiate oral communication.

g.      Encourage the development of speaking strategies.

These principles are considered to be applied in the teaching and learning process of speaking. It means that the teacher should be aware of them in designing her/his teaching.[1]

How to Make Sandwich

I am going to write about how to make sandwich. It is easy to learn how to make sandwich. Sandwich is a simple food. Sandwich is a popular type of breakfast or lunch food, taken to work, school, college, or picnics to be eaten. Many people like it because sandwich is a health food and vegetables fresh. Children and adults can be eaten and good for body. The sandwich easy not complicated to portable food everywhere. And then, sandwich available in restaurants or cafe and easy to make it by yourself. As well as being homemade, you do not need to spend many times to make sandwich. The sandwich which you made by self do not lose the taste to that sold in the restaurants or cafe. This sandwich is sometimes hot as well as cold. So I shared how to making sandwich it perfect every time.

The ingredients of sandwich are very easy to buy and get in the market. So you should buy the materials are two slice of bread, cheddar cheese, tomato sauce, mayonnaise, tomatoes, lettuce leaves. Do not forget to look good products and look expired. After that select the fresh bread, tomatoes and lettuce carefully. If you do not want lettuce leaves you can change with mustard greens. It was also very fresh vegetables for ingredients sandwich. And then if you do not like tomato sauce you can take chili sauce but should not for children. And then you can buy meat or sausage if you want that only to complete the ingredients. The ingredients to make sandwich does not need a lot, buy sufficiently because materials vegetables will surely spoiled. Finally do not forget to buy butter it is important.

Before you start, wash your hands well make sure your hands clean and then you can start. The first step is place a slice of bread on the plate. Second thickly butter your bread, thickly because cheese sandwiches can be dry. Third thinly spread on your salad, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, tomato/chili sauce to add just a little more taste to the sandwich. Slice your tomato very thinly and spread evenly over one slice of bread. Then a slice of another cheese, then a slice of the final cheese. Repeat until there is a fairly thick, very even layer of cheeses. After that, add lettuce leaves, sausage or meat. Then put a slice of bread on the top. Carefully lay the second slice of bread onto the one with cheese and tomato on until all sides are as parallel as possible. Cut into small triangles. In a preference survey, people tended to find sandwiches cut into small triangles nicer to eat.

And finally enjoy the sandwich. It is taste very delicious, right? Do not felt hesitant to make sandwich at home by self. The method cooking is so simple and not difficult. And then if you make sandwich yourself will be proven of food hygiene. Now you do not need to difficulty to buy a sandwich outside which is not necessarily guaranteed price and cleanness. Cooking is often less magical because we can create a very nice taste of a variety of materials for making yourself meal. When we cook will have more value and felt happy on one’s personal. The menu sandwich so matched to people who are in state of hurry and no time for breakfast at home. Eat sandwich also will be filling the stomach and will not starve when we activities. Let’s to make a sandwich, practice will  make perfect.
